It's hard to imagine any good coming from the driver of a 707-horsepower vehicle not being able to see out the windshield. That accounts for Fiat Chrysler recalling about 1,200 of its 2017 Dodge Challenger SRTs with the Hellcat V-8.

The problem is a possible oil leak. A hose to the engine oil cooler does not meet factory specifications, according to a report filed yesterday with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.

That failure would cause such a rapid loss of engine oil that "the customer may experience impaired visibility due to oil spray on the windshield, engine seizure and/or a potential risk of fire due to engine oil contacting a hot surface," the automaker said.

A Fiat Chrysler spokesman said a disconnected line "may activate a check-engine light before any other consequences are observed."

The vehicles were assembled between Feb. 6 and May 30 this year. The action covers two- and four-door models.

The automaker said it began investigating the issue on May 13 after getting three warranty claims in two weeks. Two days later, the supplier in Costa Rica conducted tests that confirmed a problem.

As of July 28, the automaker said it was not aware of any accidents linked to the defect.
