So..... after the long ordeal of getting this A8 to T400 conversion up and running (we’ll call it a learning experience).... it works! I also made a couple of changes with the motor. All this has me way behind schedule getting it on the track, but with the results we’re seeing now, I think it’s going to have been worth it. Thanks to a heads-up from WhipCat..... I’m confident now that the big Whipple is a good blower for a stroker like this. Whipcat, working with Gearhead Fabrications, was the R&D car for a spacer that increases the plenum volume in the Whipple. When Phil told me about the results that they saw, I got him to put a word in for me to get one. To say the guys at the shop were skeptical would be a understatement. There generally is no easy hp at this level, so they were like.... yeah right 😒. The improvement in efficiency is remarkable. Boost went down, IAT went down, and power went way up. We went from 25 to 22 lbs boost and saw a peak IAT of 109 degrees. Conditions were 75* with a DA of 1600ft. So... a word about the trans. We expected to be giving up hp to the T400 (they are known to eat hp). Tim said to expect to loose over 100whp. I don’t know how much it ate but it sure as hell didn’t come up short. Tim and Tommy threw the book at the tuning to get this to happen. Basically three full days and so many files they lost count. Tim said it’s perfect without a hint of knock at the full 23 degrees. Next up will be tuning at a track rental on March 13 at Wild Horse Pass in Phoenix with the goal of taming the beast to get off the line.
