UPDATE Sept 2023: Land Speed Trials at Loring AFB, Limestone ME

So this is from my first year (I still hadn't pulled the bananas off, they were still a thing then)

I had not pulled the hood vent grates, I didn't learn until later that was recommended by Dodge. When I did pull them for the next two years/events, the hood lift was reduced, but not eliminated.

Two different shots from 2Sep2016, and then a frontal from 3Sep2016 shot to show that my hood normally sits where it should and isn't permanently deformed.

So while I do think it should be addressed, keep in mind that other than pulling the hood vent grates, my hood has ~100 passes on it and hasn't suffered any obvious issues.


Also! Of note is that these are at the 1/2mile mark or so, so the speed is only ~150mph, not ~175mph...

I suspect that hood style (Raisinbran @Hunter) is more ridged than the original style.

I would ask others who have had both, cuz my opinion is that the raisin bran hood (seems to me when waxing/cleaning) is less rigid.

Thanks Bull, it appears this is common, maybe normal, and no reports of hoods flying open, but is sure is creepy. Got me thinking about an improved version of hood pins. Maybe instead of hairpins, have nuts, or maybe button head screws. That and maybe a Stage 2 or a tune! 200 next year would be cool!

My problem with the pin kits is more that our hoods are "hollow" and the pins tend to divot the hoods.

Years back, right after I discovered this, I was trying to develop a blind latching system that couldn't be seen at all and would grab the bottom side, which is more sturdy than the top surface.

But it got complex/expensive and I didn't get a lot of interest.

The 2023 Loring Land Speed Trials Harvest event last week faced some weather challenges. The first day was Wed, calm wind but rain was forecast all day. Thurs was high headwind. Friday was cornering headwind.

I got up early Wed and the forecast said we might have time for a couple runs. I got there early to check in, tech inspection, and was ready when they started. I normally don't go all out in the first run, I usually like to do a sub max run to make sure nothing is shaking or falling off. But since the first run might be the best of the trip I went for it. The 1mi was .5 off my best 2 years ago but I did the 1.5mi hitting my goal of 185.

I came around and did a 2nd run hot, it was slower and rain started on my return (without wipers BTW). I was the 2nd to last to run on Wed.

Thurs was 15-20mph headwind, gusts to 30, I didn't bother running.

Fri was cool and very calm when I arrived, got ready and got into line. Did a best for this car in both the 1 and 1.5mi. Wind picked up right away and temps rose, once again the first run in the morning was the best for the day.

Here is one happy young guy, he won this Mustang, some builder had a on-line contest/raffle (don't ask me) but he still had to pay about 1/3 the value in taxes!!! It had a pulley, E85 tune, not sure what else. He had to trailer it and bring E85 with, his estimate was near 1000hp. He did is orientation runs in the high headwinds Thurs then let it loose on Fri. Went home very happy. Sometimes life is good!

One very nice thing about these Mustangs, they come with factory, push button release, hood pins, they had a nice low profile. At these speeds they are a really good idea.

This is a really cool project. A '53 (or so) Studebaker with two (2) 6.0L GM truck engines with 2 turbos. The engines are coupled directly crank to crank, one in front of the other. No waste gates, he injects CO2 to control boost (don't ask me). He is still working it all out and did 173 as his best run.

I wondered what someone who can afford this kind of time and financial investment did for a living... He said he's a plumber! Suddenly, it all makes sense!

This is a really cool looking car for 1953, some of their cars really were ahead of their time.

This is really cool, this couple beat the Guinness record for tandem motorcycle run achieving 186.852. He did over 203 as a single.

This bike did 233.059 in the 1 MILE!!! (He did not do any WOT 1.5 mi runs.)

This old baby did 132.913 in the 1.5mi. Great color! I passed him on I95 on the way home, he had his 4/70 a/c going full blast! Good thing temps were mid 70's! The drive back to NJ would feel a lot longer if it was a hot day! He still had his numbers and class painted on, I told my wife to wave to him! She said he waved back but wasn't smiling. As cool as these cars are, a 500mi drive sure ain't what is used to be!

My brother-in-law had a '64 Ranchero with a 6 banger, awful vehicle, except you could carry cargo in it, it was actually very handy. This is a '62 with a Pinto engine. I did not get details as the owner was busy and not in a talkative mood. I could not find him in the run logs so apparently he never had a successful run. Too bad, cool vehicle even if it is underpowered.

Ferrari Bob was there again, he did 202.214. 2 years ago he did 208+ in the same car. He drives it 600mi to get there. He said next summer he will be Lambo Bob! My guess is these cars cost less than his ex.
