caution: do not use brake clean on the pinion flange, pressed rubber bushings you cannot replace, pinion was inspected, all bearings good, all machined surfaces good. IMG_8935.jpeg

Pinion gears are sharp, need to pull the ring gear but thats a tomorrow me problem, time to go get beer

Thats a hell of a beefy bearing arrangement there on that pinion assy!!!
It is, pain the balls to clean. However they spin freely now, was having an issue where it was binding before cleaning, think there was a ton metal in there. There are no specs on ZF diffs so its going to be trial and error to get backlash correct. I have numbers from dusterhoff and will confirm on assembly. Need to pickup seals on Monday.

Right, but if a case went bad you could swap them into a new case if you crack one or whatever. I was under the impression (and thought I had heard) the pinion wasn’t removable

I wouldn't even dare try to remove that pinion from the shaft. It is hard pressed on there and would be a hell of an effort. But yes you are correct, cases are swappable. I have my LLC being processed by ZF to see if I can get FSM and repair specs.

Hopefully, they will wake up and realize with millions of Chargers and Challengers built, there will be a healthy aftermarket demand for diff and transmission parts for a long time.

Hopefully, they will wake up and realize with millions of Chargers and Challengers built, there will be a healthy aftermarket demand for diff and transmission parts for a long time.
So I did find this documentation on the pinion flange removal and installation to repair the seal. This helps me with re-assembling that, however I didn't mark any orientation as I was cleaning out metal so that was more of a priority. I wonder if imbalance will occur. However if you install this into a billet housing there's no way to keep track of that so, by reasoning maybe its a herring???

"If the pinion nut alignment index mark exceeds the pinion shaft alignment index mark the unit must be discarded. If the pinion nut alignment index mark falls short of the pinion shaft alignment index mark the unit will possibly generate an Noise, Vibration, or Harshness (NVH) concern."

Knowing this I would have just bought a billet case and said screw it with these housings. However I don't think this will be an issue, we shall see.

Yea, I don't have a feel for this ZF design since I have never seen a big ass ball bearing pinion design like that until now - all US stuff I know of has tapered roller bearings as you know. I for one sure appreciate you sharing your journey into the unknown with us - I bet a lot of us are taking notes :sneaky:

so let me get this straight. They’re marked from the factory (maybe), and if you can’t see the mark on the pinion flange and the nut, you’re supposed to make your own index mark before disassembly to mimic factory “torque”. Is there no set torque spec for these??? Blows my mind too. I guess that’s how they get around telling you the torque specs? Then again they also tell you to index the driveshaft before you take it out I haven’t done that and I’m fine, maybe I get lucky but that doesn’t have anything to do with torque indication like this index mark would

there is no torque for the nut, you tighten the nut till you achieve bearing pre load. tighten in small amounts till achieved. do you have the spec for pre load cause I couldn`t find it anywhere but I had no reason to take my flange off when I did my wave track. brgs. felt smooth with no end play.
